Bio: Sarah Evenson (they/them/theirs) is a gay, transgender print-media artist living and working in Minneapolis, MN. A 2026 McKnight Fellow at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, they celebrate the book as a living, democratic form by incorporating new media and including widespread distribution within a global network of readers as an intentional part of their art practice. Their most recent project, the zine-by-mail subscription service GAY MAIL FRIEND!, ships work by queer/trans artists from the Midwest to a world-wide audience. Sarah will trade zines with anyone who asks—please message them!
Statement: I root my animations in screenprinting because it is a medium where the pressure needed to create a print comes from the same areas of the my body that were most affected by my top surgery: the chest, arm, and upper back muscles. As a gay, transgender person who does not desire a linear female to male transition, I am interested in depicting transformation as liminality, a tender condition of perpetual shift. When my screenprints embellished with graphite are treated as animation cells and looped together, they produce images of quaking, quivering bodies in a state of here-yet-not-yet-here.
