Description: As a child, my mother would fall asleep listening to her mother playing piano and singing in another room. As a child, I would make music, knowing that my mother was listening from another room. The Serenade Project explores possibilities for sharing in another person’s sensory experience across time and space and layers of translation. The sound that lulled my mother to sleep eighty years ago in India emerges here as a miniature player piano roll of Schubert’s 1828 Serenade in D minor, filtered through digital code, dressmaker’s crinoline and inherited scissors. Serenade Study (2025) is dedicated to Anne, Linda and Doris, who helped me make the music, and to the memory of my mother in another room.
