Description: I'm a Black nonbinary memory worker and artist described as a weaver of fiber, verses, and vision. I’m primarily a fiber and materials sculptor that collects organic materials; discarded or secondhand textiles; and uses knots, weaving, and interlocking of these materials to express the density of grief, memory, security, and desire. I believe the vessels and objects I create are like abstracted self-portraits, memory-keepers, talismans, proof of life in a world sinister to Black and gender nonconforming bodies. Obsidian, described as the "Stone of Truth" in many cultures, expresses the stone's properties as a mirror or portal to the subconscious that reveal one's deepest most hidden truths; whether they were ready to see them or not. Formed when lava hardens, it becomes a metaphor for the dissolving of anger and fear to move towards a transformation of authenticity and helps ground one's true self to the earth. In using layered and interwoven leather, I hope to illustrate the intricacy of this trans and gender nonconforming experience. What do you see in the stone?
