Statement: Kyle Austin Dunn probes at ideas of consciousness and identity- how these variables are influenced, distorted, and conflated by immaterial fabrications and impressions. His viewpoint is that common cognitive biases are overlooked and underestimated subjects for consideration- institutions of thought which determine so much of our shared reality but are examined far too inadequately. Using optically activating patterns, his paintings suggest that the psychology of perception has clues for exploring and challenging preconceptions. The resulting work often teeters compulsively under a dubious rubric, suspending judgement while agitating for an emotive response, one that can flex and warp in an instant.
