Statement: Brian Bartz (Berkeley, CA) is an interdisciplinary sculptor and educator. Through his work, he seeks to defamiliarize our collective relationship to technology, presenting viewers with speculative objects which complicate our understanding of how a “device” might look or function. More recently, he has been particularly captivated by the poetics of communication technologies such as radio and satellites, and the ways they interact across landscape and place. Some of the research interests which animate his work include depictions of terraforming in science fiction, militarization throughout the cold war, and the relationship between technology, mysticism, and the cosmos.
