Description: The two pieces I am including in WOW MOM are from my solo exhibition, Endless… which addresses hierarchies in architecture, art, and craft by subverting their compositional and material referents. The work uses functional items like lights and rugs, moving them from their horizontal planes and rotating their orientation to the wall. Along with that shift in orientation also comes the introduction of unusually used materials, like cat-6 cables making up fibers of a rug. Handbuilt clay forms take on structural roles, recalling steel or veer into chunky, eclectic patterns. Half of the works in the show take form as stacking columns, but lack the solidity of their art historical and architectural predecessors, instead they are porous and hairy, pieced through the center with the slice of a light or chain. The other half of the works are ceramic frames, also bifurcated by light or chain, showcase the walls they are presented on. This is the first solo show and body of work I have made since becoming a mother, which has been a really inspiring and interesting challenge!
