Description: "To Study Oneself" was created as a pre-emptive research exercise for other works including "Tears Burn Upon The Skin". The work grants a chance to explore specific symbology, narratives, and styles of representation in a looser context. Overall, it shows an effort in testing which visual cues can indicate ideas of sketch, research, and note-taking—specifically pulling from the visual language of scholarly notes in an academic context, and placing it onto the brief of a self portrait. In completion of the piece, a clear style of highly dramatic self representation through both figurative elements and the use of symbols as personal stand-ins arose.
