Description: Teaching Practice brings together the work of artist–professors from thirteen Bay Area colleges, situating their production within the fertile space where pedagogy and personal practice converge. For many of these educators, the classroom becomes a site where their artistic concerns, whether formal, conceptual, or material, are refracted, adapted, and shared. What they teach is often a reflection of their own inquiries, shaped into assignments that encourage students to wrestle with similar questions. Each work in the exhibition is presented alongside an assignment, prompt, or exercise that served as its conceptual starting point, offering viewers the opportunity to consider the reciprocal relationship between teaching and making. By bringing these materials into dialogue, the exhibition examines how the studio informs the frameworks presented to students and how, in turn, pedagogical processes expand and challenge the artist’s own practice. Together, these works present a compelling portrait of contemporary Bay Area college art education, highlighting the ongoing dialogue between teaching and artistic practice, where pedagogy and creation inform and enrich one another.
