How to read the 2D view of a show

See where each piece hangs, and how to move around the plan.

  1. On a published show, click “2D View” on the show page. It is the same floor plan the curator hung the show with, read-only — nothing you do here changes anything.
  2. The button is there once the gallery has published the room, which is a separate step from publishing the show — the plan is only worth reading when the work is actually where it says it is. Until then the page is open to staff, jurors, curators and artists, and to nobody else. If somebody sent you a link that says the page does not exist, that is why, and the gallery can turn it on.
  3. Pick a wall with the tabs at the top (N, E, S, W, and Floor for anything on a pedestal).
  4. Move around with the arrow keys, or W A S D, and zoom with the scroll wheel or a pinch. You can also drag an empty part of the plan.
  5. Press F to fit the whole wall back into view — the quickest way out of being lost after zooming in.
  6. Press M to measure: click two points and it tells you the distance between them in inches.
  7. The keys are listed under the plan as well, so there is nothing to memorise.
  8. Each piece carries its placard — title, artist, medium, dimensions — so the plan doubles as a way to find a particular work before you visit.
