Bio: After a 90s childhood spent in Rochester, NY and after completing a biology degree in 2008, Alice Combs moved to San Francisco for an MFA. With a little bit of research and a little bit of humor, she works in diverse--mostly scavenged-- media from sculpture to drawing to ephemerally polished rusty metal, highlighting the breakdown of everyday objects and ideas. She lives, works, and gardens in San Francisco in an intentional community with others who believe art is worth doing.
Statement: My current mode of working is in textiles--using reclaimed industrial felts to make folk-inspired patterned quilts, and using fabric scraps and old clothes to make patches, making wearable pieces of quilted clothing, and even using stringed instruments as looms. "Hair Guitar" meticulously destroys a guitar's ability to make sound by weaving in thousands of strands of my own hair in between its six strings. I've tried at various points in life to learn musical instruments. Music can move people emotionally more reliably than visual art. I'm jealous of that. Inevitably the practice of music fails to hold my attention. But tedious weaving practices? That I can do.
