Bio: Alison Alstrom was born in San Francisco in 1969, and lives and work in San Francisco's Mission District. She began painting in oil as a little kid alongside her aunt. After leaving home and high school at the age of 16, she took classes in drawing and painting at city San Francisco City College and elsewhere through the 80s and 90s. In 1999, she received the Merit Fellowship award in Painting to attend the San Francisco Art Institute. After a period of gestation, she began showing work in 2023
Statement: I work primarily in oil, in contained palette of earth tones in a naturalistic style. My paintings explore the dual acts of seeing and being seen through close examination of my subjects. Objects of nature, especially birds and parts of birds in various states are a recurring mechanism, serving as stand-in protagonists in an ongoing study of being human and alive, even as they function more traditionally as things of beauty to be contemplated. I also work in portraiture, using the same process of close looking to try to achieve a felt sense of my subject. I mostly paint on traditional canvas or panel, but also have a fondness for found wood as a surface, as it reflects my interest in the idea of beauty inherent in the real.
