Bio: Joseph Vaughn is a multimedia artist from Bozeman, MT who currently lives in Berkeley, CA. He works in painting, sculpture, drawing, video, and ceramics. His practice is informed by his childhood experiences in a new age doomsday cult, where he was exposed to diagrammatic representations of religious dogma such as the human-divine connection and future visions. His abstract work, spanning watercolor, egg tempera, charcoal, colored pencil, and sculpture, are a reaction to these diagrams. They engender a performative practice of meditation, and sometimes penitence in their meticulous production, to help him process intense and irresolvable feelings and memories. The resulting artworks are a similarly meditative visual, which loosely mirror the human body’s unseen interiority and its materiality, where feelings collect, overlap, glow, flow, and fester before they are externalized.
