Bio: Kim Boerner is a San Francisco-based artist working in watercolor and oil. World events, music, literature and the natural world inspire her to create paintings imbued with emotion.
Her teaching experience with teens in Oakland, California, and her union leadership and activism often show through in her work.
She studied painting and drawing at SUNY Albany, San Francisco State University, Laney College (Oakland), City Collage San Francisco, UC Berkeley, and the San Francisco Art Institute. In the past few years her paintings have shown in numerous juried group exhibitions throughout the country.
Statement: Kim Boerner’s art expresses the intimate emotions and struggles of people. They might be anxious, or in transition. Their feelings may be public or private. In her work she creates, as John Berger said, “the beauty which expresses hope”.
That beauty is in those who ask for/demand change, relief, or a better life. The people in her paintings may be vulnerable, but are never just victims.
Taking a situation in the world or in her community, she paints a private environment that tells a story.
Some of her figures are “complete”, others exist as incomplete gestural bodies. By leaving out some of what we usually see— the viewer can focus on that beauty which goes beyond differences.
