Statement: As a non-native Californian, my paintings process feelings of displacement and longing for connection. Old houses, old furniture, my subjects are often prosaic but carry connection to community and the weight of history. I’m interested in how certain light and shadows can activate and build a sense of time.
I work in acrylic because it’s fast and I can feel a sense of connection from the visual to my body when I move the paint around. I also use paper mache and recycled cardboard to express an idea that needs dimension.
My work emphasizes commonality, using humor and the beauty of the mundane to highlight our shared experience as humans, in the face of massive commercialism and relentless sowing of divisiveness.
