Bio: Sarah A. Smith was born in Boston, MA, 1969 and studied fine arts at Carnegie-Mellon University, (’91). She then trained as a scenic painter in Pittsburgh, PA working on multiple movie sets, theater productions and television programs including work as a scenic artist for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Upon moving to San Francisco in the early 2000’s she refocused on her own art heavily inspired by the energy and creativity of the SF arts scene during that time. Many galleries she has shown at in the Bay Area have since closed their doors but nevertheless deserve a mention and deep gratitude: Ampersand International Arts, Mimi Barr, Swarm Gallery, The SFAC’s Grove Street Windows and Round Weather. She was an AIR at The Headlands Center for the Arts and had a solo show Southern Exposure. Her work has been included in group shows at The de Saisset Museum, the UC Davis Memorial Union Art Gallery and the Palo Alto Art Center. Her drawings are in the collection of The Battery in San Francisco, CA and 21C in Louisville, KY.
Statement: Sarah A. Smith is a visual artist whose work exists in the intersection of drawing, sculpture, installation and collage. Various styles and a variety of techniques contribute to a body of work marked by constant experimentation. Employing a vast array of materials like wood, shells, dried wildflowers, gold leaf, patinas, plaster, twigs, feathers, twine, cardboard, powdered pigments and sawdust. Like disjointed lines of a poem her works across mediums can seem disparate yet they remain connected. Though not overtly political her ecologically centered themes and narratives offer ways to try to process the loss we are experiencing on a staggering scale.
