Bio: Camila Michaliszyn is a Brazilian multidisciplinary artist based in San Francisco working across sculpture, movement, and installation. Her practice examines the relationships between humans and nature, focusing on how human, animal, plant, and mineral bodies interact and resist fixed systems of classification. Her work operates between physics and spirit, using kinetic sculpture, mimicry, and transformation to create interactive installations that appear responsive and alive.
Statement: My work explores the complex relationship between humans, nature, and the material world. I am interested in how different forms of life and matter interact, transform, and resist rigid systems of classification. Through sculpture, movement, and installation, I investigate the boundaries between human, animal, plant, and mineral bodies, and the ways these bodies communicate, imitate, and adapt to one another.
My research engages themes of nature, wonder, and connection through a body of primarily interactive, living installations inspired by my background growing up in Brazil, surrounded by the Atlantic Forest. My work emerges from lived experience, long walks spent observing, documenting, and collecting discarded ephemera, and bringing it back to life. Extracting an object from where it once belonged is always a complex act. It compels me to question my role as a human, as an immigrant, and as an artist. In the studio, these fragments perform in unfamiliar environments: some resist, refusing domestication; some collapse; others adapt with surprising grace. In these moments, I feel myself shifting between roles of power—colonizer, caretaker, witness, owner, interbeing.
