Description: This display reconstructs a sacred shrine from the early twenty-first century, when politicians, commercial mascots, and cartoon figures appear to have been worshipped together as gods. Alfred E. Neuman represented mischief and resistance to authority; Bibendum (the Michelin Man) ruled over travel, the stars, consumption, and excess; and Santa Man embodied seasonal abundance, gift-giving, and miraculous flight. Together, these figures reveal a civilization in which advertising, entertainment, politics, and commerce held equal power over the people.
