Description: I have had a recurring dream since 2019 where I discover rooms in buildings I didn’t know were there. I always understand that these rooms belong to me, but their existence had been unknown to me until the moment of discovery. In Jungian psychology, dreams are thought to show the unconscious complement to your conscious life—the parts you omit or suppress—to restore psychic balance. Jung himself had many dreams featuring newly-discovered rooms, which he believed to represent parts of himself he didn’t previously know or understand. The rooms in my dreams are mysterious, sometimes filled with junk I have to get rid of, sometimes enormous and endless. But they are always mine. But they come with a caveat: I have work to do to make them truly mine. These rooms are an invitation to make something happen, to bring forth into the world something that I want. My work in textile installation is an attempt to answer that invitation. This Clubhouse Did Not Previously Exist is an improvised amendment to Le Shed, a small structure in the backyard of Heike Liss. Already separate from the main house and surrounded by a garden, one could stumble upon Le Shed without knowing it was there. It is mine, for now, altered on the inside by densely crocheted blankets and other forms, a continuation of my series of blanket forts I’ve been making since 2008. They are sites where time and rules cease to exist, governed by my inner child and her wackiest desires. Like the rooms in my dreams, Le Shed has invited me to make something happen, to uncover new parts of myself through the work of my hands.
