Bio: Joanne Wang is an artist, fabricator, and educator based in Oakland, California. Utilizing embroidery, secondhand textiles, and found objects, her process-based practice explores themes of consumption and identity.
Joanne received her BA in Art and Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her professional background includes creating art installations and activations for businesses and events, with an emphasis on material awareness and sustainability. In parallel, she works with local reuse nonprofits and teaches textile-based workshops throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Material reuse and sustainability form a throughline across her art practice and community-centered work.
Statement: I use embroidery, found objects, and secondhand textiles to create soft sculptures and installations that explore the invisible themes of labor, time, waste, and gender that are embedded within the fabric of our capitalist society. My process-based practice involves experimentation, play, and manipulation of materials until fully transformed. Through processes involving repetition and multiplication, I create visually stimulating textures, biomorphic forms, and playful color stories that nod to the absurdity of humanity while highlighting patterns, feelings, and moments we collectively experience.
