FUTURE RELICS: Curatorial Edits from 4087

Artifacts from the Berkeley Time Rift

A freak electrical storm over the 580 in Berkeley has overlapped with the same electrical frequency waves of the great electrofusion containment accident of the year 4087 causing a rift that cut out a small section of a history museum displaying a collection of objects. This rift brings us 2061 years in the future to the year 4087. Like a Vegas slot machine that never seems to line up, these objects do not hold up to their own truths at present. Future Relics are realized by the historians of the 41st century for their many truths but also are misperceived. It is unclear what has transpired between now and year 4087, and what relevant information they have from today.

Through work in museums, galleries, and the “art world”, Oliver Hawk Holden examines how we are sold on the societal importance and commercial value certain objects carry. Holden understands the importance of how we display valued objects and plays with the idea that the mundane may be extraordinary. While we are inundated with increasing amounts of information on a daily basis with everyone seeing everything, there is also an opportunity to say what we think about it. Do we dive into the surging river of informational disorder or stay on the side watching it all flow out to sea. Fear of technological advancement has been a part of human history since man lifted the first tool, but has never been as unyielding and out of control as it is today.
