Self-taught beginning at age 30, White’s work became public in 2014 with the ProArts 2x2 Solos Exhibition, followed by the 2015 Tournesol Award from Headlands Center for the Arts, the Bay Area Now 8 triennial at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and residencies including a fully-funded, year-long residency in Roswell, New Mexico, a Master Artist residency with Joan Snyder at Atlantic Center for the Arts, the Mills College Art Museum A+P+I residency, and 10 solo shows and multiple group shows in the Bay Area and beyond. While primarily a painter, White often exhibits her work in multi-media installations that include drawings, sculpture, video and books. She now splits her time between Oakland and a shack on the Mendo Coast where she hosts How Do You Paint, an unhinged, comedic and semi-instructional painting show on YouTube.

Statement: My paintings inhabit a world where personal memory, dreams, political reality, religion, banal culture, and archetypal myth have not yet been separately categorized. Images translate from one story into another, remixing contexts until they lose their fixed meanings. Horror and hilarity trade masks. The miraculous and the absurd share the same language. The sacred, psychological, traumatic, mythic, domestic, and comic all stand on equal groundless ground. Over the years, the work has delivered images of confinement and escape: caves, cells, thresholds, thrashing, illuminated openings. But the way to liberation is never clear, and running beneath the work is an undercurrent of grief—for failed transformations, lost certainties, and the perpetual distance between desire and fulfillment. The sacred and ridiculous are merged. Enlightenment appears as a spray-painted glow. The process of painting is a tightrope act between intention and accident, structure and impulse. Both order and chaos can become prisons. I am searching for a third place: moments of bewilderment, play, revelation, or recognition. Rather than offering a coherent narrative, these works invoke a raw world, unfinished and alive, where meaning is in the making.

Emma Spertus

Emma Spertus is an artist who makes sculptures and site specific installations. Recent exhibitions include "Helping Heads" at Personal Space gallery in Vallejo, and a site specific installation titled "Sentence Model" for the Kala Windows in Berkeley. She has been the recipient of residencies at Chalk Hill and Winslow House Project. Emma has completed a diverse range of community-minded art projects, including co-founding Real Time & Space, which offers affordable artist studios to 17 artists in Oakland Ca. A graduate of the MFA program at Hunter College, Emma has exhibited her work at White Columns, Dorsky Gallery, Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, The Lab, NIAD Art Center, and other venues. Emma lives and works in the Bay Area.

Statement: Emma Spertus creates sculptures and architectural interventions, which bring attention to two- and three-dimensional space in humorous or unexpected ways. Her work focuses on questions around the vacancy, materiality, resource use, language, and display. She use wood, metal, paper, cardboard, fabric and found elements like building facades to create large portals and small studies for empty storefronts.

I was born and raised in Watsonville, California. In 2011, I graduated from the University of California San Diego with a BFA in art practice, and in 2022 I graduated from Stanford University with an MFA in studio art. Since 2012, I have been working in art education, teaching courses in art history, filmmaking, and art. Presently, I am teaching drawing courses at Stanford University.

Statement: In my work, I examine the overlapping relationship between the natural and human-made environment and highlight patterns and systems of efficiency that exist within them. Through installation, drawing, and film, I re-evaluate the everyday spaces and objects that surround us, with added attention to elemental phenomena.

In between and amid many local and national exhibitions, Hussong co-founded the experimental artist space Jet Wave, curated the Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth retrospective at New Langton Arts, received the James D. Phelan Art Award for Printmaking, and was at the influential heart of the Department of Art Practice at UC Berkeley for nearly thirty years, earning the Distinguished Teaching Award.

Gaby Wolodarski is an artist, teacher, and tattooer who lives in California. Her painting and installation work uses a mix of humor, abstraction, figuration, and trompe l’oeil to probe fictions and contingencies of the contemporary human psyche, foregrounding ways in which the visible world is subject to pressures from our language-oriented brains.
